Donor Stories
At Cangene Plasma Resources we value every donor. Here are some reasons why our current donors keep coming back to our plasma centers.
Donor Rose
Rose learned how important donors are when her seven-year-old son was diagnosed with leukemia and he had to receive blood products as part of his treatment. Because of that, she decided to became a platelet donor and 10 years ago she became a plasma donor. Since donating plasma takes less time than platelet donation, she is better able to manage her plasma donations around her work schedule.
Rose is also part of our Anti-D plasma program. This plasma is used to create a medication given to certain women during pregnancy to prevent hemolytic disease of the newborn. Having received a similar product while pregnant with her son, she feels plasma donation is another way to give back. “I just thought, you know saving babies, that’s a pretty good thing. That’s why I continue to donate plasma”.
Donor Alicia
When Alicia first came into our California plasma center, she saw a photo of someone who had been donating plasma for 20 years. She remembered thinking “Wow, look at that kind of commitment. That person has to be crazy to come in twice a week for 20 years.” Now that she has been a plasma donor for almost five years, she thinks “I can now see how you could easily start doing this and it just becomes a part of your life. And who knows, maybe they will put my picture up someday.”
Even though Alicia has donated plasma at other centers, she keeps coming back to Cangene Plasma Resources because she really enjoys the staff. “It is like a family; everyone knows your name”.
Donors Yvonne, Audrey, Raquel and Travis
For this family, plasma donation is not only a way to help other people but it is also a time for them to catch up during the week. Yvonne (pictured second from the left) initially started donating three years ago after her daughter told her that since she was Rh Negative her plasma was needed for medications that can save babies’ lives. Then about a year ago, Yvonne convinced her three grandchildren, Raquel, Audrey and Travis, to come in and donate plasma as well.
“I believe in what is happening here” said Yvonne and “it makes me feel like I am helping someone from just donating my plasma.”
Travis really enjoys the time seeing his family. “Since we now live in different areas of town, this is one of the few times that I get to see everyone” said Travis.
“This is a way for us to catch up” and “I really like the staff here” said Raquel (pictured far left).
